These days, some dropshippers might find it hard to build their email list simply because website visitors and potential customers do not just give their email addresses away all willy nilly. This is probably one reason why they shy away from making an effort to build their email list and instead focus on ads and other forms of marketing. But now, I am here to tell you that you are doing things wrong, and that email marketing deserves a lot more attention.

If you have been neglecting email marketing, now is the time to focus more attention to it and start building your email list right now. In this post, we will discuss why and how you can build your email list by up to a thousand people without the hassle.

In 2017, I launched a web store, found a product to sell and made some money out of that, tried to scout for and sell more and just launched a lot of ads for them, but I never really found my fate after that. And then there was a period when I did a lot of traveling and sort of left my business out of my priorities. During those times I was making money in terms of gross revenue, but never really made enough profit when I take all of my expenses into consideration.

And going back, I could have used email marketing to have at least 20% to 30% income flowing in, but I sort of neglected that and just shut everything down. What I did instead was I sent around 10 personally written emails and made only around $4,000 for the whole year, which is nowhere near the 20 or 30% margin.

The following year I realized this mistake and went full-on with rebuilding my email list and go from there for the whole 2018. Let’s have an example:

Here you can see the revenue I made out of doing email marketing alone — a whopping $84,000+, or about 31% of my total revenue. This was $80,000 more than what I made the previous year, which I could have used to further optimize and advertise my products and website, or even have as a backup fund should anything go south in my business.

Why You Need to Grow Your Email List

The main reason why you need to grow your email list is such that in the long run, you will have a sense of security — that you can always get in touch with potential customers should you run out of audiences from your ads. And again, 20% to 30% of your total revenue comes from email marketing, so if you are making a lot of sales just from sending emails, you can be sure that everything else will work quite well.

How We Grow Our Email List

At the beginning of this post, I told you that I will help you grow your email list without the hassle, and that I will do! So let’s cut it short — in building my email list and gather leads, I use a software called Listagram.

The platform promises “higher email opt-in rates in less than 30 minutes”, but how does it do just that? It’s simple, by “gamifying your customers’ user experience!

Listagram uses a fun “wheel of fortune” that spins when a site visitor enters his or her email address. In return, he or she is gifted with a discount code that can be instantly used around your store (discount values may be modified according to your preferences). This wheel can be seen all around your website so whenever a customer browses around it, they will always be reminded of their discount code. What’s more, you can add a countdown timer to drive a sense of scarcity around that discount.

Now, the main thing that I want to point out here is that we’re sending all these people from paid marketing onto our website. We can’t use Listagram for free — well technically, we can, because the platform now offers its services for free, only the wheel will have a watermark. If that doesn’t bother you or get in the way of your marketing strategy, feel free to use it. However, there are other plans that you can choose from:

So going back, in most cases we are going to pay for our customers to visit our website. If they leave, you will lose what you paid for, but that doesn’t mean that all is lost. When they sign up for the Listagram discount code, their email address is automatically registered to your website, and you can already start using it for your email marketing. You can send them your welcome series, introductory series, reminders and even newsletters just to ensure that they will indeed make a purchase any time in the future. They will be on your list until they unsubscribe, which gives you endless possibilities to increase chances of conversion.

Email Management System Tool

Once you have that perfectly written email to promote your product or a site-wide event, you can use Google Mail to send it to multiple recipients on one go. From your chosen eCommerce platform, you can export a CSV file of all the email entries registered on your website. Copy the email addresses and go to Gmail, and on Recipients, select BCC and paste it there. Send and you’re all good!

Just a bit of a note, though: Google can only handle up to 20 or 30 recipients at a time, so this method is only practical if you have a small email list.

For handing out emails to a larger list, I personally use a software called Klaviyo.

Klaviyo is an easy-to-use email automation system that you can use for any type of business. You can sync it with external platforms for a hassle-free creation of segments based on your audiences’ behaviors or activities. Plus, you can get a personalized demo and “find out how Klaviyo can help your business grow with a product walkthrough and consultation” by clicking this link here!

Effectivity and A/B Test

One thing that scares dropshippers away from adding this little feature to their websites is the thought that their customers might find it too tacky, and that this is just yet another gig to hook them up and force them into making a purchase. Let me remind you that I am not going to give you this tip if it hasn’t worked for me, and to prove my point, I did an A/B test to show you Listagram’s effectivity in terms of conversions.

Here you can see that there isn’t much of a difference between the two situations (one with a promo wheel [B] and another without [A]). And to make things even better, situation B even had more conversions and overall higher total revenue. So, what else is stopping you from applying it to your own web store?!

Here is an overview of my store’s performance within the period of January to July. In those 7 months, I managed to reach a 10% conversion rate by sending emails alone! This just goes to show how much email marketing can have a huge impact on your sales.

Let’s Wrap It Up!

Email marketing is a highly effective marketing strategy that you should prioritize if you want to increase your chances of having greater conversion rates. And you don’t even have to make too much of an effort nor do you have to spend a lot of money to build your email list — all you need are some simple tools and add-ons and a touch of creativity to help you get that well-deserved boost.
